Historique :	Originaire de Montpellier, Alexandre Cabanel (1823- -1889) remporta le prix de Rome en 1845. Bénéficiant de nombreuses commandes de portraits sous le Second Empire, parmi lesquelles peut se compter le portrait de Marguerite de Moustier, le peintre est aussi réputé pour ses compositions mythologiques. Entré à l'Institut en 1863 et actif à la direction du Salon, il est connu pour son opposition face aux Impressionnistes.
