Historique :	Envoi de l'Etat en 1852. Peinte en 1843 et exposée la même année au Salon à Paris par son auteur, le peintre Joseph-Urbain Mellin, dont on ne connaît que trois oeuvres à sujet religieux, cette toile de grandes dimensions fut donnée dix ans plus tard par l'Etat à la paroisse de Vesoul, vraisemblablement sur la recommandation du marquis d'Andelarre, arlos député de la Haute-Saône (Langrognet, 2014).

Précision_sur la representation :	Elle a pour sujet l'épisode où saint Jacques le Majeur, condamné par Hérode Agrippa à être décapité à Jérusalem en l'an 42 (ou 44), donne un baiser de paix au scibe Josias, son propre dénonciateur, ce dernier converti et baptisé par l'aôtre se préparant à subir lui aussi le martyre. (Langrognet, 2014)
